Staff and residents from Coverage Care’s Briarfields home have stepped out in Shrewsbury to raise funds for a vital operation for a teenager with Cerebal Palsy.
Eighteen residents, carers and friends walked a three-mile route from the home in Raby Crescent to The Quarry and back and raised more than £400 for Thomas Lake’s Crowdfunding appeal.
With some dressed in onesie outfits, including Karen Blundell dressed as a unicorn leading the way, 96-year-old Joan Hopwood walked the whole route independently with her walking trolley with Enid Becker, 86, completing the majority of the distance on her own.
Jan Griffiths and Elke Whittman joined the team in wheelchairs to enjoy the fun and support the cause. Other walkers including Thomas, his family and their dog Hollie along with Coverage Care’s Chief Executive David Coull.
Home Manager Denise Morris said: “We had a great time walking through Coleham and along the river to the bandstand and back and made quite a spectacle.
“It’s really important for us to get involved in our community and when we heard about Thomas Lake and his fundraising, a sponsored walk seemed a good idea. We are delighted with the amount we raised and everyone had good fun doing it.”
The money raised will go towards the appeal that is aiming to raise £25,000 for an operation to help him control the spasticity and muscle tone in his legs.
