When New Fairholme in Oswestry joined the Singing for the Brain initiative last year, Activities Coordinator Liz Dorricot was deeply inspired by the impact it had. She found the sessions incredibly fulfilling - not only for the residents, but for the staff who took part as well - and has since written a poem about the experience.
The home has enjoyed the programme so much that the team has continued the activity every week, now combining the singing sessions with their regular exercise class. The atmosphere, energy, and smiles it brings have become a real highlight at New Fairholme.
Music, movement, and community spirit - it’s been a wonderful addition to life at the home
SINGING FOR THE BRAIN BY LIZ DORRICOTT
Joyous song, drifts,
Across the room.
No matter if,
Not in tune.
Songs known,
Throughout life,
Evoke memories,
Happiness, delight.
Some sadness too,
We address it all,
As gentle tears,
Start to fall.
But deep in music,
Profound in song,
Our voices all,
But carry on.
Singing for the brain.
