News

The whole of February is LGBTQ+ month, and is always a meaningful moment across Coverage Care, offering us the chance to celebrate diversity, champion inclusion, and reflect on the ways we support every individual who lives and works within our homes. It’s a time to recognise the importance of feeling safe, respected, and understood - values that sit at the heart of our approach to care.

One of the most impactful parts of this work is our ongoing partnership with SAND (Safe Ageing No Discrimination), an organisation dedicated to improving the experiences of older and ageing LGBTQ+ people. Together, we’re helping to ensure that later life is lived with dignity, authenticity, and pride.

Why LGBTQ+ Inclusion Matters in Care

For many older LGBTQ+ people, the journey to acceptance hasn’t always been easy. Some have lived through decades of discrimination, secrecy, or fear of being judged. Entering a care setting can bring those worries back to the surface - which is why creating a visibly inclusive environment is so important.

LGBTQ+ month gives us the opportunity to highlight the work we do year-round to make sure every resident feels:

  • Safe to be themselves
  • Respected for who they are
  • Comfortable sharing their stories
  • Supported by staff who understand their needs

Our Partnership with SAND

Coverage Care’s collaboration with SAND plays a key role in strengthening our commitment to inclusive care. Through this partnership, our teams benefit from:

  • Specialist training that deepens understanding of LGBTQ+ history, identities, and lived experiences
  • Practical guidance on creating welcoming, non-judgemental environments
  • Resources and tools that help staff confidently support LGBTQ+ residents
  • Opportunities for reflection on how policies, language, and everyday interactions can make a difference

This work empowers our staff to deliver care that is not only compassionate but also culturally aware and sensitive to the unique experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals.

Celebrating LGBTQ+ month Across Our Homes

Throughout the month, our homes take part in a range of activities designed to spark conversation, build connection, and celebrate identity. These might include:

  • Rainbow-themed arts and crafts
  • Story-sharing sessions
  • Displays honouring LGBTQ+ history
  • Inclusive social events
  • Staff learning sessions inspired by SAND’s resources

These moments help create a sense of belonging - not just for LGBTQ+ residents, but for everyone who values kindness, equality, and community.

A Commitment That Lasts Beyond the month

While LGBTQ+ month is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate, our dedication to inclusive care continues all year long. Working alongside SAND ensures we keep learning, keep improving, and keep championing the rights and dignity of older LGBTQ+ people.

At Coverage Care, we believe that everyone deserves to feel seen, heard, and valued - and we’re proud to take meaningful steps to make that a reality.
