Discover how Coverage Care homes in Shropshire mark Remembrance Day with poppy crafts, wartime music and reminiscence for residents.

rememberance day 2026Every November, the poppy appears on lapels, doorways and windowsills, and our care homes in Shropshire are no exception. For many residents, Remembrance Day in a care home is deeply personal. It is part of their own lives and family histories, and it is remembered with real feeling.

At Coverage Care, we believe Remembrance is one of the most meaningful times of the year. It brings residents, families and staff together to reflect, share stories and say thank you.

Why Remembrance Day Matters in Care Homes

Many of our residents grew up in the shadow of the Second World War. Some lost parents, brothers or friends, and others served in the forces or on the home front. Even for those who didn’t, the songs, stories and traditions of Remembrance carry lasting meaning.

For people living with dementia, familiar rituals can be especially powerful. A bugle call, a hymn learned in childhood or the simple act of pinning on a poppy can bring comfort, connection and sometimes memories that surprise even those who know them best.

Remembrance Activities for the Elderly in Our Homes

Each Coverage Care home marks Remembrance in its own way, but you will often find:

  • Poppy-making and decorating. Residents make paper and knitted poppies to decorate the home, a gentle, sociable activity that gets everyone involved.
  • A two-minute silence. Residents and staff pause together at 11am on 11 November, and again on Remembrance Sunday, 8 November, in a calm and dignified moment of reflection.
  • Reminiscence activities. Looking through old photographs, medals and memorabilia, and listening to residents’ own stories, is at the heart of what we do.
  • Wartime music. Songs like We’ll Meet Again bring smiles, singing and togetherness.
  • Visits and tributes.

Supporting Residents Living with Dementia at Remembrance

Remembrance can stir strong emotions, so our teams are trained to be sensitive. We offer a calm, unhurried approach, let residents choose how much to take part and are always there to listen. For some, joining in is a comfort. For others, simply sitting quietly nearby is enough.

Reminiscence activities can be a lovely way to connect with a loved one living with dementia, even when other conversations feel difficult.

How Families Can Get Involved

We love to see families join in. You could share a photograph or a story about a loved one who served, help with a poppy craft, or sit with a cup of tea during a reminiscence session. If you’d like to take part, please speak to the team at your loved one’s home.
