With the prolonged heat wave we've been experiencing this summer, staying properly hydrated and nourished has never been more important for our residents. At Coverage Care, we believe summer wellbeing isn't just about beating the heat - it's about making the season enjoyable, sociable, and full of little moments to look forward to, even when the temperatures climb.
Why Hydration Matters More As We Age
As we get older, our sense of thirst naturally becomes less reliable, which means it's easy to become dehydrated without realising it. Warmer weather only adds to the risk. Even mild dehydration can lead to headaches, tiredness, confusion, and low mood - so keeping fluids topped up throughout the day is one of the simplest and most effective things we can do to support our residents' health and comfort.
With this extended spell of hot weather showing little sign of easing, our care teams are taking an especially proactive approach, rather than waiting for residents to ask for a drink.
Introducing Our Hydration Trolleys
You may have spotted our hydration trolleys making their rounds! These friendly, colourful trolleys travel through our homes several times a day, offering residents a wide variety of drinks to choose from - teas, squash, sparkling water, and mocktails!
The trolleys are about more than just fluids, though. Each visit is a chance for a chat, a smile, and a bit of social connection - something we know matters just as much as the drink itself. For many residents, the trolley's arrival has become a welcome highlight of the day, and a natural moment to pause and catch up with staff and fellow residents.
Refreshing Fruit, Ready to Enjoy
Alongside our drinks trolleys, we're serving up plenty of seasonal fruit this summer - think chilled watermelon slices, juicy grapes, and fresh berries. Fruit is a brilliant way to boost hydration naturally, as many varieties are packed with water as well as vitamins and fibre.
Our chefs and care teams work together to make fruit easy and appealing to enjoy, whether that's bite-sized pieces for residents who need a little extra support, or a colourful fruit platter to share during afternoon activities in the garden.
Little Changes, Big Difference
Small, consistent touches - a trolley round, a bowl of fresh fruit, a reminder to have another sip - add up to real wellbeing benefits over the course of a summer. It's all part of our commitment to person-centred care: noticing what residents need, and making it easy and enjoyable for them to get it.
We hope these small summer traditions bring a bit of extra refreshment and joy to residents' days - and if you're visiting a loved one this month, don't be surprised if you're offered a cold drink and a slice of watermelon too!
