My day begins with a smile and a stack of menus. Distributing them to our residents isn’t just about breakfast choices - it’s the first chance to check in, share a laugh, and set a positive tone for the day. Every three months, I join fellow activity co-ordinators from across Coverage Care homes to share ideas, swap stories, and brainstorm new ways to bring joy to our residents.
These meetings are invaluable, but the real inspiration comes from the residents themselves - we always ask what they would like to do.
Having spent four years as a care assistant before becoming an activities co-ordinator, I also dedicate one-to-one time with residents on our dementia unit. These moments are deeply meaningful - building trust, offering comfort, and connecting in ways that go beyond words. It’s a part of my day I truly cherish.
One of my favourite parts of the job is driving the Montgomery House minibus. Whether it’s a trip to the seaside, a local café, or just a run to the shops, these outings help residents maintain their independence and reconnect with the world beyond our walls. It’s amazing how a change of scenery can spark conversation - residents open up, share memories, and you see a whole new side of them. It’s a privilege to be part of those moments.
Back at the home, I’ve started a “Knit and Natter” group. I’ll admit - I’m no knitter - but I’m a champion natterer! It’s been wonderful to see residents who don’t usually join activities come along just for the chat. That’s the magic of it: connection over craft, even if the knitting needles stay idle.
We also welcome a parade of furry friends - dogs, guinea pigs, even ponies - who bring smiles and comfort to everyone. And when the music starts, the home truly comes alive. I regularly book musicians and bands to perform, and the joy on residents’ faces as they tap their feet or sing along is unforgettable.
But my role goes far beyond planning events. I design and deliver activity programmes tailored to each resident’s interests and abilities. I help encourage social inclusion, maintain detailed records of participation, and work closely with care staff to ensure activities align with individual care plans. I also run memory-based sessions, gentle exercise groups, and sensory activities to support emotional and cognitive wellbeing.
I build community links with local schools, churches, and entertainers, and I’m always on the lookout for new hobbies to introduce - whether it’s gardening, storytelling, or simply sharing a cup of tea and a good chat.
I love my job. It’s not just about organising activities - it’s about creating moments of meaning, laughter, and connection. At Montgomery House, every day is a chance to make someone’s day a little brighter.
