A Shrewsbury care home has received another glowing endorsement from care watchdogs following an unannounced inspection.

Briarfields, a 42-bed care home in Raby Crescent run by Coverage Care, retained its ‘good’ rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which is the same as it received at its last review in 2016.

Two inspectors, an assistant inspector and expert by experience visited the Belle Vue home on December 20 and spoke to 10 residents, five relatives and nine members of staff including carers, a kitchen assistant, and the duty and registered managers to assess how safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led it was.

The official report praised staff for the dignity, care and respect they showed residents and for the way they involved people in the planning and delivery of their own care.

Inspectors commented on the effective systems in place to ensure that residents are safe and well cared for and the extra steps the home has taken including achieving the Gold Standard Framework for end of life care and working with SAND (Safe Ageing No Discrimination), a specialist group campaigning for the rights of older LGBT people who are accessing health and social care.

Briarfields is one of 14 homes operated in Shropshire by the not-for-profit organisation Coverage Care, Shropshire’s largest independent care provider.

Its Chief Executive David Coull said: “This latest report is an independent verification of the quality service that is being provided by the entire Briarfields team.

“It was particularly gratifying to see the inspectors recognise that our service users feel well treated and supported at Briarfields and the effort that is made to promote a culture of high-quality, person-centred care across every aspect of the home.”

Manager Denise Morris added: “The report was so positive and recognises the work we have done to build on our previous achievements following from our last Good inspection. We are committed to continuing to provide the highest possible care for our residents and will strive to be recognised as an outstanding service.”
