People living at a supported housing scheme in Telford are empowered to have choice and control over their lives by a “kind and compassionate staff team”, according to the latest report into its services by independent care watchdogs.

Chilcott Gardens in Madeley received a ‘good’ rating across the board following a visit by a team from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) on April 30.

Coverage Care currently provides personal social care for 54 residents with a physical disability, sensory impairment or dementia who live independently at Chillcott Gardens.

It was ranked as ‘good’ against the five key criteria – whether it is safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led – following the visit that included interviews with 12 people who received care.

The official report said people were supported and treated with dignity and respect and involved as partners in their care and that they were treated with care by compassionate and respectful staff, who were described as “out of this world”, “lovely,” and “just the ticket.”

Inspectors also spoke to three visitors, the registered manager, two team leaders, two carers, a student on placement and a visiting healthcare professional to assess the standard of the services provided.

Care and support plans and medication records were also reviewed. Recruitment processes as well as records relating to Coverage Care’s quality monitoring, health and safety and staff training were additionally checked.

Chillcott Gardens is the latest facility run by the not-for-profit provider to get a positive endorsement from the CQC. So far in 2019, inspections of three Coverage Care homes – New Fairholme in Oswestry, Lightmoor View in Telford and Briarfields in Shrewsbury – have resulted in ‘good’ ratings with a fourth, Woodcroft in Market Drayton, being classed as ‘outstanding’.

Chief Executive Chris Wall said: “We are delighted that the high quality person-centred care that our team is delivering at Chillcott Gardens was recognised by the inspection team during their visit.

“To hear the staff described in such glowing terms is very pleasing. They are dedicated to supporting residents to live full and independent lives with compassion.”

Manager Carol McPherson said: “Our aim is to provide a safe and caring environment where people feel supported to live a full and independent life. We were delighted to receive another ‘good’ rating and will continue to build on this strong foundation.”
