Gillian Walker, who works at Woodcroft, in Croft Way, won the title in The Co-operative Funeralcare contest held to mark Carer’s Week.

More than 20 care homes and providers from Whitchurch, Wem, Market Drayton and the surrounding area entered carers for the awards.

Gillian, who has worked as a carer for 55 years and at Woodcroft for 13 years, was given the winner’s certificate of achievement with her colleague, care assistant Demi Orwell, receiving a certificate of appreciation.

Woodcroft Manager Darran Bolas said he was “delighted” that Gillian’s hard work and attitude had been recognised.

“She always goes above and beyond the call of duty, no matter what she is doing. Gillian will also go the extra mile for anyone, she is very professional and always provides the highest standard of care to everyone she meets.

“On top of all of that, she is the kind of person who lights up a room when she comes in. I am delighted that Gillian won, beating off competition from dozens of other very worthy nominees.

“Demi also did very well to be recognised in the awards amid stiff competition.”

Gillian, 70, said: “I was really pleased to be nominated by Darran, let alone to win. I love working in the care sector and at Woodcroft and it is lovely for that to be recognised.”

Lee Southby, Manager of The Co-operative Funeralcare in Whitchurch, said: “As an organisation, we know how dedicated carers can be and we wanted to recognise that during Carer’s Week.

“They are often unsung heroes and people like Gillian deserve to rewarded publicly for the work they do.”
