When he’s not training for the trek, Phil who is 50 this year, is the catering manager at Innage Grange care home in Bridgnorth, where he is already something of a celebrity, having organised many fundraising events with the residents of the care home and the day centre.

Explaining why he is supporting the Alzheimer’s Society, Phil said: “ My dad David died last year after doing a brilliant job of caring for my mum Gay who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, which affects 1 in 5 people over the age of 85.”

“Alzheimer’s disease is something that will touch all of us in some way and it’s great to be doing something positive in memory of my Dad that will help many other people” continued Phil.

“I'm just amazed at how generous people have been already. I have exceeded my original target of raising £2000 for the Alzheimer’s Society and now hope to raise £6000 before I start the 10 day trek in November” said Phil Batten.

Chief Executive of Coverage Care David Coull said: “We are delighted to join the many sponsors who are supporting Phil in his quest to complete a gruelling trek in the Himalayan Annapurna mountain range.

Registered manager at Innage Grange, Pauline Tremellen added: “ Working in a care home Phil is better placed than many to appreciate just what a cruel disease Alzheimer’s can be and our residents think his trek is just fantastic.”

Phil’s Himalayan trek is in an area of Nepal and includes a visit to Pokhara and Kathmandu and will visit the Ghurka village of Ghandruk. Organised by the Alzheimer’s Society, the trek is on mountain trails that are steep and rocky in places through forests, farming terraces and small villages.
